Surviving in a bad economy is a tough job for individuals and companies alike. Everyone has to tighten their belts and try to make a limited budget answer for every little basic need.

In a bad economy, it’s easy for companies to simply let go of entire departments (or families to forego certain luxuries altogether) to cut back on costs. This is a knee-jerk defense mechanism that people employ almost automatically, thinking that they significantly reduce their expenditures if they let go of the most expensive items in their everyday list. Companies pare down on their marketing and PR efforts, families give up one of their cars. The same thing can be observed all over the world as people stretch their current budgets to its limits.
However, cutting back on your biggest expenses isn’t always the smartest thing.
